Febo Cincotti è risultato vincitore della procedura valutativa a professore di I fascia presso il Dipartimento di Ingegneria informatica, automatica e gestionale Antonio Ruberti, Settore Concorsuale 09/G2, SSD ING-INF/06 - codice concorso 2019POR006, bandito con Decreto Rettorale 2239/2019 del 30.07.2019, i cui atti sono stati approvati con Decreto Rettorale n. 1059/2020 del 06/04/2020.

Title: Brain-Computer Interfaces for Neurorehabilitation: Design and Application

Abstract: Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) provide an avenue to directly translate activity of the human central nervous system into actions, thus helping to improve, restore or enhance physiological functions. Basic research has progressed for about three decades, and this technology is now being evaluated outside laboratory settings. Use of BCI technology to improve motor functions, e.g., in neuromotor rehabilitation, should encompass the physiological principles of evidence-based medicine, and account for the therapeutic practice conventionally carried on in the hospital ward. Extensive laboratory research on EEG-based brain-computer interfaces produced sufficient knowledge for this technology to be applied now in the real world. Solutions including BCIs must be driven from a user-centered design. Several applications are envisaged: substitution and restoration of motor functions are ripe for the end-user.

Short Bio: Febo Cincotti is associate professor of Biomedical Engineering at the Sapienza University of Rome. He holds a PhD degree in Biophysics, and an MSc degree in Electronic Engineering. His scientific activity is generally framed in the methodological and applicative research on processing of neurophysiological signals and includes the development of direct Brain-Computer Interfaces for assistive and rehabilitation purposes. He is co-author of 124 journal articles and 97 conference papers. His (Scopus) H-Index is 52. He has been principal investigator in 5 EU-funded projects, and coordinator of a national charity-funded project. He was also co-PI in 6 EU-funded projects and participated to numerous international and national research projects. As expert in the field of Brain-Computer Interfaces, he has been member of the advisory board of an EU-funded project, opponent in PhD dissertations, and keynote speaker in several international conferences. He currently teaches Biosignal processing and Neuroengineering for the MSc programs in Biomedical Engineering, Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, and Control Engineering.
