Group Readings On Web Information Retrieval

What

Groups readings are coorganized by the Departments of Computer Engineering and Computer Science. The goal of group readings is the collective study of topics of importance in some "hot" areas of computer science, at the moment especially pertaining social networks and related topics. Group readings are an attempt to share the burden of studying the paramount of literature in these fields, so as to ease widespread of theirknowledge within our groups.
These readings may be particularly useful to PhD students of Computer Engineering and Computer Science groups.
Some topics covered by next readings will be:

- Modelling of social networks
- Algorithms for information retrieval in social networks, especially the Web
- Stability of algorithms for social networks
- Clustering and data mining of document collections
- Spectral Analysis

Where and when

Group readings tentatively take place every second wednesday, at 10.30am, depending on availability of volunteers. Topic, room (most often C3 on the II floor or seminar room on the III) and speaker will be announced in advance.
Lectures take about 1 and 1/2 hrs and the speaker is expected to cover one topic, usually the contents of one paper of relevance, providing insight into the problem considered and the techniques used. Main goal is sitting and understanding the problem together, so a regular presentation with slides is not expected. Instead, a brief question and open problem discussion is welcome and encouraged.

Location: Dipartimento di Informatica e Sistemistica
Università di Roma "La Sapienza"
Via Salaria 113
00198, Rome

Whoever wants to volunteer for a lecture can proceed in either of two ways:

1. Propose one topic of interest and relevant bibliography to Alessandro Panconesi or me.
2. Contact me for the assignment of a paper to read and then present.

A good reading list, organized by topic, is available at the home page of the course held by Jon Kleinberg at Cornell University. The home page of Jon Kleinberg is itself a good starting point.
