ABSTRACT: In the present paper necessary and sufficient geometric conditions for the equivalence of  single input single output nonlinear time-delay system, under bicausal change of coordinates and regular output transformation, to a linear weakly observable time-delay system up to input-output injection are given. The obtained results are then applied to the observer design problem.

Controllability of driftless nonlinear time-delay systems

ABSTRACT: The controllability of a class of nonlinear driftless time-delay systems is fully characterized for the first time. This result is obtained within a newly introduced geometric approach. Moreover, all those possible autonomous (or non controllable) elements, which can depend on the delayed variables, are also characterized when the system is not controllable and in consequence, a canonical form of those systems is derived.

Extended lie brackets for nonlinear time-delay systems

ABSTRACT: In this note the Extended Lie bracket operator is introduced for the analysis and control of nonlinear time-delay systems (NLTDS). This tool is used to characterize the integrability conditions of a given submodule. The obtained results have two fundamental outcomes. First, they define the necessary and sufficient conditions under which a given set of nonlinear one-forms in the n-dimensional delayed variables x(t),,x(t-sD) D, with D constant but unknown, are integrable, thus generalizing the well known fundamental Frobenius Theorem to delay systems. Secondly, they set the basis for the extension to this context of the geometric approach used for delay-free systems. The effectiveness of the results is shown by solving the problem of the equivalence of a NLTDS to an accessible Linear Time-Delay System (LTDS) by bicausal change of coordinates.

From chronological calculus to exponential representations of continuous and discrete-time dynamics: A Lie-algebraic approach

ABSTRACT: In this paper, formal exponential representations of the solutions to nonautonomous nonlinear differential equations are derived. It is shown that the chronological exponential admits an ordinary exponential representation, the exponent being given by an explicitly computable Lie series expansion. The results are then used to describe controlled dynamics, dynamics under sampling and forced discrete-time dynamics. The study emphasizes the role of Lie algebra techniques in nonlinear control theory and specifies structural similarities between nonautonomous differential equations, dynamics under sampling and forced discrete-time dynamics up to hybrid ones.

ABSTRACT: The geometric approach proposed in Califano et al. ("Nonlinear noninteracting control with stability in discrete-time: a geometric approach", Int. J. Control, 75(1), pp. 11-22, 2002) for non-linear non-interacting control with stability via static state feedback in discrete time, is now used to find a dynamic solution for systems characterized by an invertible drift. Geometric necessary and sufficient conditions are given. A constructive procedure for the computation of the dynamic compensator solving the problem is proposed.

Non-linear non-interacting control with stability in discrete-time: A geometric framework

ABSTRACT: The aim of the paper is to set the non-linear non-interacting control problem with stability in discrete time in a correct geometric framework so providing a solution which recalls the continuous approach, and to point out the peculiarities of discrete time dynamics. Geometric necessary and sufficient conditions for the solvability of the problem are given, and a constructive method figures out the regular static state feedback solution. It is shown that if the given dynamics is feedback equivalent to a decoupled system characterized by an invertible drift, the computation of the distributions involved can be carried out in a simple and elegant way. The main results are thus proved exhaustively in this case and then generalized to submersive systems.

ABSTRACT: The paper focuses on a long standing problem which consists in identifying those time-delay systems which can be transformed into a delay-free system by a suitable change of state coordinates. Both linear and nonlinear systems are considered. It is shown that the so-called cyclic vectors introduced by Olbrot and co-workers are rehabilitated through the actual control inputs or through some virtual inputs which render the system fully controllable or accessible. Whereas the current literature includes solutions for linear systems, no result is available for nonlinear time-delay systems yet.

ABSTRACT: The aim of the present paper is to introduce new mathematical tools for the analysis and control of nonlinear time-delay systems (NLTDS). An Extended Lie bracket operation equivalent to the Lie bracket operation for system without delays is introduced. It will be shown that this operation, which generalizes that introduced in [19], helps to characterize certain properties of a given submodule, such as nilpotency. This basic property is then used to define the conditions under which a given unimodular matrix represents a bicausal change of coordinates. The effectiveness of the proposed approach will be shown by solving an important basic problem: to characterize if a NLTDS is equivalent or not, to a Linear Time-Delay System by bicausal change of coordinates.

Introducing for these dynamics a differential representation with jumps, it is shown that the input-to-state or input-to-output behaviours can be represented as suitable compositions of exponential series.
