Call for 28th cycle (2012/13) is now closed!

An International Call for PhD Applications is issued on a yearly basis. The Call for Applications is usually in June, the deadline for sending the application is in the second half of July, the selection takes place in late september and the selected candidates are expected to start the PhD program on November 1st (below you find the submission procedure of the last call.

Some of the scholarships offered are financed by the Ministry of Education, University and Research.  Non-fee paying studentships may be offered, and others may be financed by outside bodies. Foreign students should contact the Italian ambassador or consulate in their own countries, or their own Foreign Affairs Ministries, for more information on the opportunities to join Doctorate courses in Italy.

IMPORTANT: Students awarded with an ErasmusMundus, Marie-Curie or similar scholarships can apply in any period of the year. Send an email to the Coordinator for further instructions (degiacomo.at.dis.uniroma1.it)

Submission Procedure

Candidates who wish to apply for a Ph.D. position are requested to fill and confirm the following two application forms:

The INFOSTUD form registration must be completed by July 20, 2012.
The in-site application form must be completed and submitted by August 31, 2012.
 


Selection Procedure (2012)

Admission is based on an evaluation of the skills and aptitude of the candidate to carry on research in the scientific areas of the Ph.D. Program. The selection procedure includes two phases:

    • - Evaluation of qualifications
    • - Interview

 

Evaluation of qualifications.  The evaluation Committee assigns to each candidate a maximum score of 60 for the academic curriculum, qualifications, and publications. Scores are assigned in accordance with the assessment criteria defined by the Board of the Ph. D. Program:

    • - Academic curriculum (exams, thesis, and grades)
    • - Publications
    • - Letters of recommendations supporting the candidate, if any
    • - Professional/work/research experience and any other qualifications
    • - A research proposal prepared by the candidate
       
       

Applicants obtaining a minimum score of 40/60 in the evaluation of qualifications are invited for an interview.

After the evaluation of qualifications is completed, the Admission Committee compiles a list of applicants in order of merit, on the basis of assigned scores. The list is announced by September 18, 2012 on the web page: http://www.dis.uniroma1.it/~dottoratoii/short-list-28th-cycle.php.

Notification is considered as delivered through the announcement of the list. The successful applicants will receive no personal communications of their results. The list includes the dates of the interviews the selected candidates are invited to.


Interview. The interview in English is aimed to assessing their knowledge, skills, and aptitude to carry on research in the scientific areas of Computer Science and Engineering. The interview also includes a discussion of the research proposal prepared by the candidate and of personal motivations for applying for a Ph. D. position. The duration of the interview is at most 45 minutes, including a presentation of the research proposal by the candidate no longer than 15 minutes. The calendar of the interviews will be published by September 18 , 2012  at the web page: http://www.dis.uniroma1.it/~dottoratoii/interviews-calendar-28th-cycle.php. Interviews will start on September 20 , 2012.

The selection Committee assigns a score for the interview of at most 60. A score of at least 40 is required for admission

Upon motivated requests sent to the Ph.D. Coordinator, Prof. Giuseppe De Giacomo (email: degiacomo@dis.uniroma1.it), interviews may be done remotely using video-conferencing facilities.

After the conclusion of the interviews, by September 28, 2012, the Admission Committee publishes the final ranking, the list of  candidates admitted to the Ph. D. program and the assignment of the Ph. D. grants on the basis of assigned scores at the web page: http://www.dis.uniroma1.it/~dottoratoii/admitted-candidates-28th-cycle.php.
