PhD in Engineering in Computer Science code: 11055 - Italian PhD program name: Ingegneria Informatica.

PHD grants associated with specific projects (2017)

  • Grant awarded by "Info Solution":

Title: Machine Learning for medical diagnosis and artificial perception applications

The objective of this project is to study the current state-of-the-art approaches in the field of machine learning and show their effectiveness in robotics perception and medical diagnosis applications. The candidate should analyze the current literature regarding machine learning approaches for data processing and identify their limits in the aforementioned application fields. Innovative algorithms should be designed and developed to classify data at runtime within actual sensor streams. The algorithms should be deployed and tested on embedded platforms in operative scenarios. A high Technology Readiness Level (TRL6/7) is expected from the developed systems to corroborate the study effectiveness.

Required Skills: Programming language: C, C++ (mandatory), Java (preferred). Proven knowledge on Machine Learning topics.

Students who are interested in this project, please contact as soon as possible the coordinator of the PhD program (dottinginf@dis.uniroma1.it).

Submission Procedure (2017)

Candidates who wish to apply for a Ph.D. position are requested to fill and confirm the following two application forms:

  • - Evaluation of qualifications
  • - Interview

The documents required for the evaluation of qualifications are:

  • - Curriculum, including the academic carrier (exams, thesis, and grades), professional/work/research experience, and any other qualification (e.g., English language ones);
  • - Publications (optional);
  • - Letters of recommendations supporting the candidate (at most three) (optional);
  • - Research proposal prepared by the candidate (please use the proposed template

These documents must be submitted by September 1st, 2017 through the in-site application form. Notice that in addition to this procedure the candidate must also register on the INFOSTUD web portal, as indicated above.

   The Admission Committee assigns to each candidate a maximum score of 60 points. Scores are assigned in accordance with the assessment criteria defined by the Board of the Ph.D. Program which concern the curriculum, the publications presented by the candidate, the letters of recommendation supporting the candidate, and the research proposal prepared by the candidate.

Applicants obtaining a minimum score of 36/60 in the evaluation of qualifications are invited for an interview.

After the evaluation of qualifications is completed, the Admission Committee compiles a list of applicants in order of merit, on the basis of assigned scores. The list is announced by September 15th, 2017 on the web page: http://www.dis.uniroma1.it/~dottoratoii/short-list-33rd-cycle.phpNotification is considered as delivered through the announcement of the list, hence applicants will receive no personal communications of their results. The list includes the dates of the interviews for the selected candidates.

Note:
In the evaluation of foreign candidates as supernumerary students, the commission will consider preferentially candidates who received a positive evaluation, but did not get the fellowship in the "call for applications to fellowships and admission of foreign nationals educated abroad A.Y. 2017/2018".

Interview. The interview in English is aimed to assessing the candidates' knowledge, skills, and aptitude to carry on research in the scientific areas of Computer Science and Engineering. The interview also includes a discussion of the research proposal prepared by the candidate and of personal motivations for applying for a Ph.D. position. The duration of the interview is at most 45 minutes, including a presentation of the research proposal by the candidate no longer than 15 minutes.

The calendar of the interviews will be published by September 15th, 2017 at the web page: http://www.dis.uniroma1.it/~dottoratoii/interviews-calendar-33rd-cycle.php.

Interviews will start on September 18th, 2017, at DIAG, Via Ariosto 25.

The Admission Committee assigns a score for the interview of at most 60. A score of at least 36 is required for admission.

Upon motivated requests sent to the Ph.D. Coordinator, Prof. Daniele Nardi (email: dottinginf@dis.uniroma1.it), interviews may be done remotely using video-conferencing facilities.

After the conclusion of the interviews, by September 30th, 2017, the Admission Committee publishes the final ranking, the list of candidates admitted to the Ph.D. program and the assignment of the Ph.D. grants on the basis of assigned scores at the web page: http://www.dis.uniroma1.it/~dottoratoii/admitted-candidates-33rd-cycle.php.
